Biography

Judge Michael Alan Strom has dedicated his career to the pursuit of justice in the courtroom, and in the community. He was appointed Circuit Court Judge in Cook County’s Ninth Subcircuit by unanimous vote of the Illinois Supreme Court in December, 2018.

Prior to his appointment, Judge Strom served in the Office of the Chief Judge, Cook County Circuit Court, Legal Research Division. As an attorney in private practice for more than 30 years Judge Strom litigated, negotiated and tried many of Cook County’s largest, most complex cases. He pioneered innovative means to resolve such cases more quickly and efficiently, reducing delays and court costs.

In addition to the demands of his caseload, Judge Strom devoted pro bono time to help Chicago children at risk in neighborhoods plagued by violence and poverty. As one of the founding members of the Chicago Coalition for Law-Related Education, Judge Strom volunteered to teach South Shore High School students how courts resolve disputes and trained South Shore’s student attorneys how to present legal arguments, question witnesses and analyze strategy in Citywide Mock Trial competitions (1982 – 2012). He also recruited and trained attorneys to create new truancy intervention and restorative justice programs in under-resourced Englewood and South Shore communities. He has served as a mentor for many young attorneys throughout his career.

Judge Strom has earned the praise and respect of the attorneys who have tried cases with and against him and the judges before whom he argued cases. Judge Strom earned the highest judicial evaluation ratings given by 9 of the 12 bar associations evaluating his credentials to serve us as a Cook County judge. Six bar associations rated him "Highly Qualified," "Highly Recommended" or "Well Qualified." All 12 rated him qualified to serve as a Circuit Court Judge.
